FAQ 01: What are the differences between “Computer Engineering” and “Information Technology” courses?

“Computer Engineering” is about using the electrical/electronic hardware, software and networks to carry out tasks in the most efficient and effective way. It is about designing and implementation of electrical/electronic systems controlled by computers, to do works better than human beings (faster, more reliable, more precise, and tireless); to solve complex problems (e.g. using Artificial Intelligence); and to perform simulations for predicting possible outcomes (e.g. consequences of global warming). Computer Engineering is critical to robotics (Artificial Intelligence); smart city/nation (sensing, data analytics); automation (precision, quality, reliability); defence (target tracking, cyber war); medical (image processing, instrumentation), etc. Our world is getting smarter because of computers.

“Information Technology” is about offering digital services to users: Web services, e-Business, digital animation, application software, gaming, etc., for better quality of life: entertainment, convenience and productivity. It is about using the Information Technology to create solutions for problems in businesses and communities.
